Project 3 - Pathfinder Exercises

These are some of my pathfinder compositions that I mainly stuck to the same overall layout of my hand-made ones, but refined them.

That's a Wrap! Project 3

The day is finally upon us. Project 3 is finished and as I breathe a very heavy sigh of relief, I would like to take some time to reflect on what I learned.

First and foremost was the appreciation for typography. I've always loved fonts and their meaning, but to look at them besides just a design element and to search for a deeper meaning I found that typography helps to tell the story.

I found the paper folding portion to be most tricky mainly because I was unable to decide on one single design so I opted for the traditional accordion fold book.

Group Dynamic

After coming off the second project having worked with a group, I was eager to do it all over again and get to know some more of my classmates. This time, my group consisted of Cherilyn Ferris, Megan McBride and Shane Pinkston.

There were no major issues amongst the group, as we all were able to cooperate with one another and get the job done. As I mentioned before, the real stressful point came when our word fell apart after constructing it. This tested our group’s patience not only with the assignment, but with one another.

Luckily, we were able to pick ourselves up and reconstruct it. Another part that was frustrating, again came with the construction phase. Since we were using the negative space, we had a lot more mass then the others, thus making it hard to access and not as sturdy. We put our heads together and came up with a solution that not only solved the problem of creating support, but also added to the meaning of our word. Whe added wooden rods and glued them on the inside which provided the needed support. As an aesthetic touch, we painted them gray, to go with our word Capture and mimic a jail cell.

Photography Essay Reflection

In the book, Photography Essay, it discusses various techniques to the art of photography and marrying that with proper placement along with some historical context of photography.

The central concept that I took away from this reading as it pertained to our project was that location plays a big part in conveying the meaning of a photograph or in this case, our word.

I learned from this reading that images are just as important as actual text that supplements the picture. Each picture tells a unique story and doesn’t always require a formally written explanation.

Parts of a Letter

What I found most compelling in this document was how they say that through understanding vocabulary of the typography, you can have a greater appreciation for the “visual harmony”.

To me this says that each form of typography carries its own meaning and does more than write out the verbal meaning of an object - it’s part of the design.

I love fonts. Fonts help tell a story by their unique characters and each font has its own personality. When doing projects, I carefully pick a font that I know will best suit whatever it is that I may be working on.

I believe that typography has a greater meaning, that develops a work more than explaining it. It helps it stand a part and ultimately transcend the meaning of it.
